The Petition for Referendum on the proposed Cruise Berthing Facility is a grassroots initiative of concerned citizens who believe that the issue of the proposed Cruise Berthing Facility (CBF) is a matter of national importance and that the financial, socio-economic and environmental costs should be
examined and weighed carefully by the people of the Cayman Islands.

The aim of the petition is to satisfy section 70 of the Cayman Islands Constitution (2009) to start a
people-initiated referendum, via petition, on whether the country should move forward with the proposed Cruise Berthing Facility in George Town Harbour.

According to the Cayman Islands Elections Office website, the total number electors as of July 1st, 2018 was 21,150. To successfully petition the Government on the issue of a people-initiated referendum, signatures of 25% of registered voters, or 5,288 persons, would be required.

A Cruise Port Referendum Cayman spokesperson stated “We call on our Government to act with transparency: towards its people, in the best interest of our country and all its citizens and residents, and to make full disclosures of all pertinent information relating to the proposed Cruise Berthing Facility
to date, including full disclosure of the Final Business Case Study, an updated Environmental Impact Assessment and other studies and reports, which consider the modifications to the original design and proposed cargo facilities, and projected costs and financing model details, to allow us - the citizens of
the Cayman Islands - to make an informed decision about our future via referendum.”

In addition to the main petition aimed at registered voters, a second version of the petition will also be available for Cayman residents who are not eligible to vote, including Caymanians under 18, other
Caymanians not registered to vote and residents. Those who are eligible to register to vote, but are not yet registered voters are encouraged to register before October 1st, 2018, which is the Elections Office’s quarterly deadline. Those who do register by 1st October will be eligible voters as of January 1st, 2019.

The petition will be available for the public to sign at Hurleys this Saturday September 1st. Other locations will be announced later this week, and volunteers will be going door to door with the petition in all districts and in all three islands.
